Recent History

In 1980, Samuel Doe, a Liberian military officer, overran the government and publicly executed the president. Doe suspended the constitution and assumed complete dictatorial power over the Liberian people. For more than twenty years, the people of Liberia saw no

end to violence, government corruption, and civil war. Samuel Doe was replaced by another dictator, a much more terrifying dictator – Charles Taylor.

Doe and Taylor fought for power each using whatever means necessary, including children. Kids were drugged with cocaine and marijuana, and brainwashed to see everyone as their enemy – even their own parents. Children as young as eight were armed and taught to kill by watching Rambo movies and practicing on live prisoners. 300,000 Liberians perished in the wars leaving thousands of children without a

mom or a dad, without food or a place to live, without hope.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberia is seeing

its first period of relative peace and

hopefulness in 25 years. God’s Kids is

lifting up orphanages that are home to

the children who are broken by the war,

disease, and poverty.

More than a dozen Liberian orphanages have signed the God’s Kids covenant to join our growing network of homes that agree to meet our high standards. Today, Liberian children in God’s Kids orphanages are each part of a family headed by a director that teaches them the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
